SOCIAL ROOMS
pomona college, claremont, california
- completed. 1998 -

Pomona College commissioned CEDG to help create a variety of Social Rooms for student groups on campus. CEDG remodeled seven rooms in the basements of campus dormitories. The challenge was to create rooms with different characters for a variety of social functions within the existing context.
The design solution resulted in two exterior access ramps plus a covered tunnel between two basements, providing handicapped access. CEDG furnished one room specifically for small meetings and conferences; another serves as a cafe with tables, chairs and a serving bar. The showpiece of the project is a room for dances, with a sculptural lighting fixture running the length of the room. Warm-up kitchens service each of the social rooms.
This innovative basement renovation project received an Award of Merit from the Pasadena & Foothill Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
