BOON RESIDENCE - claremont, california
completed - 2008

The Boon’s were outgrowing their two bedroom, one bath 1920’s storybook home. Their twin daughters were growing, their dining room was only six feet wide, the kitchen had only seven foot of counter space only 12” to 18” deep and an enclosed patio served as the family room.
Not only did they need more space, they wanted it to be as earth friendly as possible. First, we wanted to save as much of the original house as possible as this saves material and energy. The new design had to create separate bedrooms for the girls with a shared bathroom, a new kitchen, family room, and laundry.
The new design required the demolition of the non-historic enclosed patio and the skin along the rear of the home. The windows and doors were saved for later reuse.
The design centers around the new family room. The slab on grade is used as a thermal mass which is heated by the sun through a south wall of patio doors that bi-fold open, almost doubling the size of the room outdoors onto the adjacent patio. The two spaces are further unified by a common tile floor and the patio’s 4x12 trellis beams extend into and across the family room. The patio is enclosed on the east side by the girls new bathroom and a new bedroom. The patio is enclosed on the west side by an extension of the family room wall. A tiny bubbler marks the center of the patio which empty’s into the pond which is integrated into the patios southern edge. The bubbler and pond condition the air before it enters the home. The east and west patio walls protect the family room from overheating as well as defining the patio as an extension of the family room.
The living room is daylit through original patio doors and a new skylight that focused on the fireplace. The kitchen is evenly daylit by a high eyebrow window that bounces light off the north kitchen wall.
Kitchen cabinets are made of wheat board, and the glass upper doors were made from the original exterior windows removed to make way for the addition.
