The existing one story structure was partitioned into small spaces that had limited access to natural daylight. The addition of 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom upstairs allowed the ground floor to be opened up, creating a spacious great room that accommodates piano and other music performances. The office and library have been moved to the north side of the building, with views and direct access into the backyard. Opportunities for built-in shelving were utilized throughout to house the clients' extensive collection of books and music. The project promotes the lifestyle of the clients by providing a vertical separation of private and public living space, improving indoor-outdoor connection, and integrating their passions and interests into their built environment.
A major goal for this project was to maximize natural daylight and ventilation. To accomplish this, the upstairs addition was positioned on the north and west sides of the structure, thereby allowing vaulted ceilings in the great room and entry. The second floor roof pitch is inverted; with high north and south eaves sloping down to meet at the center to draw light deeper into the building. The master bedroom's sloping ceiling draws the eyes up and out to spectacular mountain views to the north. Operable, dual glazed casement windows enable the clients to passively ventilate the structure. The exterior design of the project borrows elements from the older structure so that the roof slopes and massing enhance and build upon the original style of the home.
