KANOK RESIDENCE - santa monica, california
- completed 2010 -

   Certified as LEED Platinum, this residence has both passive and active systems that contribute to the sustainable operation of the site and building.

<Passive Energy Performance>
Apex Block, an innovative composite of 20% cement and 80% recycled polystyrene, serves as the wall structure and thermal mass for the house.
  - Polystyrene is diverted from the landfill for recycled use in this
     highly efficient building material.
  - Apex Block provides 3 times the insulation of typical
     construction, natural mold and termite resistance and a 4-hour
     fire wall.

The insulation gained from Apex Block, building orientation, southern glazing, and natural ventilation work as a passive system to maintain year-round comfort without the energy use of mechanical systems.
  - Is the first Passive Solar home designed in Santa Monica,
     according to city officials.
  - Performs 77.5% better than Title 24. The Title 24 baseline is the
     minimum energy code standard that any new building in
     California must meet.
  - Has been nominated for elite 2009 Case Study Program by The
     Southern California Gas Company, as most sustainable new
     home in its coastal climate zone, due to low energy and
     resource demand and environmental impact.

<Urban Runoff Mitigation>
A water cistern has been designed in place of the typical sub-surface infiltration pit used to meet Santa Monica’s urban runoff mitigation requirements.

  - Water runoff from roof and site is stored in cistern for future use,
     rather than immediate absorption into the soil.
  - Stored water is pumped into irrigation system to reduce use of
     potable water for plant maintenance.
